RE: Southport, NC

We stayed at the Shalotte KOA last fall. http://www.koa.com/where/nc/33177/ It is about halfway between Southport & Myrtle Beach. It was very empty when we went, so nice & quiet. It was clean & we would stay there again. It's very close to Calabash - great seafood.

RE: looking for nc campgrounds

We stayed in the Uwaharie National Forest last year & went to the zoo. We also visited Marrow Mountain State Park for a day and did a little hiking. Both are nice & you can see alot of wildlife.

RE: Biltmore is really $45 per person !!!!!

Enjoy Colonial Williamsburg - My favorite place to visit. We've been there 3 times, once in the fall & twice in the spring. The gardens are beautiful & you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. It is very charming and educational. Be sure to eat at one of the taverns for dinner where musicians serenade you and you can try period food. We also enjoyed a horse & carriage ride and sipping hot cider in the fall. We hope to visit there at Christmas time in the future. We haven't made it to Biltmore yet, but plan to go eventually. Our next adventure is to the beach.

RE: Anyone cancelling trips due to gas prices?

Gas Prices make me appreciate our tent. We may need to drive the car instead of the RV though.

RE: C.campground off I-40 between Asheville and Raleigh NC?

You might want to check out Jordan Lake Recreation area, it has over a 1000 campsites with electric and water. We stayed there at the end of March and it was beautiful campground. If you are a senior the fees are $14 an if not they are $20 a night. We got there off of Hwy 64, but I'm sure there is another way to get there, we are not from that area and found it by accident. Good Luck Jordan is only about a half hour from Raleigh & this time of year the ticks can be unbelievable. We stayed there last year for a weekend getaway & left after the 1st night because the ticks were sooo bad. A friend of mine who owns a pest control company also stayed last summer and told me they also left after one night because of the ticks & they had treated their campsite! We both said we won't go back.

RE: Anyone Treasure Seek on their vacations?

We tried letter boxing last year & it was fun. You have to follow clues to find where the boxes are hidden. My daughter liked playing detective, & you get to see some beautiful places you might have missed.

RE: Camping Mooch?

I agree with looking at thrift stores & yard sales for the things you need. My husband found us a 2 burner stove for just a couple bucks, & I found a nice little cooler for our drinks so we don't have to open the big one all the time. I'm sure your friends wouldn't mind sharing their stuff until you accumulate what you need, just go & have fun.

RE: What do I need to get for tent camping ?

Don't forget the insect repellent! Ziploc bags are helpful too. Fire starter is also on our list & very helpful when it's damp out. Happy Camping!

Hersey Christmas?

We are planning to drive to upstate NY for Christmas (weather permitting) & may stop in Hersey PA on the way up. We normally drive up in warm weather & camp in our tent. Given the season, we are considering a hotel or maybe a camping cabin. If anyone has stayed in a cabin near Hersey, would love some feedback. Also, any Hersey suggestions are welcome. Is the light display worth the $20 per car? We would like to do the chocolate tour. We are traveling w/ a 5 year old & will only be there 1 night (possibly 2). Thanks!
